Inventory asked questions

What are sulfites? Are they dangerous?

Sulfites in wine are chemical compounds (sulphur dioxide, or SO2) that occur naturally, to varying degree, in all types of wine.

Ancient cultures in Greece, Rome, and Egypt, used sulfites to sterilize their containers of wine. Because sulfites are anti-microbial, it has the ability of killing off unwanted bacterias and wild yeast during wine making.

What are tannins?

Tannins are a compound found in wine that give wine an astringent, mouth-drying effect.

Tannins in found in the skins, seeds, and stalks of grapes, and play a prominent role in the chemical composition of red wine.

They help define a red wine's weight (light-bodied, medium-bodied, full-bodied) and it's perceived sugar balance (sweet, semi-sweet, medium-sweet, dry, etc).

Why do you age red wine - but not white wine?

The aging of wine, typically red wine, to improve its quality, depth, and character is an element to wine that distinguishes it from other consumable goods/drinks.

The aging of wine also augments wine's cherished mystique.

Something grand is happening inside that barrel, or bottle, that's beyond the control of meddling human hands. You make the best wine you possibly can, and wait to see the results.

Do you add sugar to make sweet wines?

But first, let's consider how sugar plays a crucial role in all forms of wine making:

The fermentation process is fueled by the natural sugar content of the grape skins, juice, and must. Without high sugar content, there cannot be high alcohol content, because the fermentation process would have been cut short (in other words, the alcohol-producing yeast runs out of its food supply).

Frequently asked questions

How do you make white wine with red grapes?

Wine color mostly depends on the color of the skin of the grape variety and the chosen viticulture procedure being used.

The highest pigmentation in grapes lies within the skins, not the pale, fleshy pulp inside, nor the juices that are extracted from that pulp.

How do you make rose wine?

Rose wine is like a delicate bridge between the hearty reds and the light whites, and since its usually a chilled wine, it makes an excellent summer drink.

Its often light pink in color (hence the name!), and while it lacks the same robust tannic structure of most red wines, it makes up for it in its stunning aromas and a crisp, refreshing palette.

What is a hybrid grape vine?

Grape hybrids are hardy, productive, and disease-resistant grape vines that have been to one degree or another engineered by humans.

Hybridization of plants is when you pollinate one plant species with the flower of another one.

Why is red wine often paired with red meat?

Red meat is NOT something you eat first thing in the morning, before a swimming competition, your big corporate interview, or as a 4AM snack in the fridge...

That's because red meat, while delicious, is a protein-dense food that takes our digestive system many, many long hours to properly break down and digest.
